Running Day 8 of 24

Today was really tough. It was the same routine, week 3 which is 90 seconds running, 90 seconds walking, 3 minutes running, 3 minutes walking, repeat. I did ok, but was really lagging up until the second 3 minute run. 2 minutes into it, I HAD to stop. I stopped and leaned over onto my knees to rest for about 10 seconds, then picked it back up and stopped about 10 seconds early. I just could NOT keep up. it was so hard.

Now I did track my route in the car the other day and it's 1.2 miles. So I'm running/walking that route in 20 minutes, which is terrible if you ask me! nearly a 20 minute mile? I can WALK faster than that! But when I jog I get so worn out, my resting "walk" to catch my breath REALLY slows me down. Not to mention the jogging itself is really slow.

Ugh, so I'm frustrated that I have not improved lung function (FEV1 = 45%), have not improved oxygen saturation (87%) and have not improved on speed one tiny bit yet. I'm still waiting to turn that corner. Oh, and bonus, my knees started hurting a little bit today. They don't hurt now that I'm not running, so that's a very good sign. But they did hurt while I was jogging. So hmmmm.... I have two days to recover. Will pick up on Monday.

Running Day 7 of 24

Even though i didn't blog about it, I have continued my workout, EVEN ON VACATION! Yes, that's right. I went running outside my hotel last weekend. Go me!

Today was the beginning of a new workout week. Each week is the same assignment. There are 3 work out days a week. Each week also gets harder.

This week I was to run for 90 seconds, walk 90 seconds, run for 3 minutes (MINUTES!!!! you heard me right!), walk for 3 minutes and repeat the whole set one more time. I was really surprised I could run for 3 whole minutes. It's not any easier than day 1 though, so I'm a little disappointed in that.

I brought my pulse ox with me. During my last 3 minute run today my HR was 176 and my oxygen saturation was 87%. It hasn't changed a bit since day 1 which is frustrating to say the least. Considering it's a 12% drop in sats I get really short of breath, I feel like an elephant is squeezing my chest and I get dizzy. But I haven't passed out yet, so I'll just keep doing what I'm doing!

Running Day 4 of 24

Today was the first day of my new workout week. The stakes were certainly set higher! I had to run for 90 seconds and then walk for 2 minutes. I repeated this 6 more times.

My total running time increased with this workout from 8 minutes to 10.5 minutes. I think the distance I traveled was about the same though, so I'm either running slower, to last longer, or I'm slowing down more when I walk, which is probably more likely.

I have no aches and pains which is good. These $100 shoes are paying off so far! But I feel S....L....O....W.... Seriously. A 20 minute mile. That's about what I'm running right now. Are you kidding me? Ugh.

For those interested in which running program I'm doing here is a link to theCouch to 5K plan.

Running Day 3 of 24

Monday was running day again! My friend Jenn biked 2 miles to my house with her 20 month old in the bike trailer to watch the twins for me at 8AM yesterday so I could run by myself. It worked out great!

I did the same run. It was the last run on the easiest mode, where I run for 60 seconds and walk for 90 seconds. Tomorrow things get harder!

While on my run yesterday I was set out to run the same route and get even further than I did on day 2 but all my plans were foiled when I was about a quarter mile from my half way point when a neighbor driving the other direction rolled down her window and warned me of two dogs running wild off leash up ahead. Needless to say I turned around right away! She told me they were pit bulls to boot. Nothing like a dog bite in the first place and then nothing like a dog bite from a pit bull where they can lock their jaws on you! No thank you! I may have to start carrying pepper spray.

Running Day 2 of 24

Today I did the same routine as Tuesday. I jogged for one whole minute and walked for 90 seconds. I repeated this 7 more times to complete my 20 minute work out. I got a little bit further down the road this time so I may have reached 1.5 miles. I need to map it or clock it in my car.

I did bring my pulse ox with me. I don't think I'll bring it every time I go but it was certainly interesting to see. I wonder if my oxygen saturation will get better at the end of this 8 week training. After the first jog my sats were 93, after the second jog they were 90 and for the last 15 minutes they pretty much remained at 87%. I saw 86 on there one time, but it didn't stay there. My HR never got over 170 and pretty much plateaued at 160 or so.

I'm a tiny bit worried about the oxygen saturation. I do get dizzy, but I've never fallen over so as long as that doesn't happen, I think we're ok!

Running Shoes

This week I purchased running shoes. As my 6 month project came to a close, and my FEV1 did not budge even one one-hundredth of a point, I realized the next best thing to do is hit the pavement to see if that helps.

I am training for a 5K, but right now I'll take 5 blocks!

I started my training on Wednesday morning. I will be running 3 days a week for 8 weeks. This is a beginners training course.

My goal on Wednesday was to run for 60 seconds and walk 90 seconds. Continue and repeat 6 times. The first 2 rounds were hard, but not unbearable. I actually fooled myself into thinking I could DO THIS!

It was around minute 14 that things got really bad. I actually had to stop my stopwatch, sit on the curb and catch my breath. After resting for about 3 minutes I re-started my stopwatch and continued on my run. 2.5 minutes later, I had to stop again for about 3 minutes. At the end of the run when I was supposed to walk 90 seconds I couldn't even do that. Again, I stopped the stop watch and sat on the pavement under a tree nauseated and completely worn out. I finally got up and walked the rest of the way home. I made it about 1 mile in 18 minutes. Pretty sad.

Tomorrow I'm going to bring my pulse oximeter with me just too see how hypoxic I'm becoming.

Fast Forward to Day 144

Today is day 144.

I haven't been updating daily, or weekly, but I've still been working out. I've been using my oxygen and playing with the wii fit or getting some cardio in on the elliptical machine. Things are going well, or so I thought.

I was motivated to get OUTSIDE today and RUN. Yeah, what was I thinking? I ran probably 6 total minutes. they were short jogs, of about 20 seconds maybe more maybe less. But the total work out was 25 minutes.

I went to the park and did some running on the grass to save the old knees. I did some running on the way to the park and the way home as well. Well on the way home I did one last jog from 4 houses down and up the driveway, into my garage and through the house to my pulse oximeter. My oxygen saturation was 86%. NOT. GOOD. My HR was 165, also not too good, at the maximum target heart rate for my age. So it looks like I may have to either suck it up and gasp for breath outdoors, and destroy my heart. OR stay inside where i can be hooked up to my o2. I haven't decided yet.
